If you don't want to go to all the trouble of having a saltwater tank or other complicated aquarium you might want to get two smaller fish bowls and get two Siamese fighting fish known as B. splendens. They can be very beautiful and come in an array of gorgeous colors. It's important to note that you can't put both Siamese fighting fish in the same bowl at the same time or they will attack each other until one kills the other. It doesn't matter if you have 2 males or 2 females. They are called fighting fish for a reason. These fish are meant to be isolated so you could either just get one or get two but keep them in separate bowls.
So if you're not doing a saltwater setup, some forms of goldfish are ok with the Siamese fighting fish as long as they do not have long or exotic tails or fins that the Siamese fighting fish might nip at. You do not want the betta to mistake a goldfish for a threatening male betta, and make sure that the companion fish isn't significantly smaller than the betta.
Careful research should be carried out before selecting bowl mates if you want to put another fish in with a Siamese fighting fish. I used to have these fish (in separate bowls) and they are quite content alone.
If you want to spring for a saltwater tank there are tons of awesome fish you can get, but they are very expensive and require lots of care. Good luck to you.
Putting two Siamese fighting fish in is okay but do not put them so they can see each other. The constant flaring by both fish as they show aggression to each other will get tiresome for the fish. To be honest I do not think a fish bowl is suitable for any fish even goldfish. Buy at least a 20 gallon (90L) tank if you can afford it. Despite marketing to the contrary, small tanks are not 'ideal for the beginner'. A large tank is more stable in terms of temperature and water chemistry.
