How long does it take a cat to adjust to new adopted dog?

We adopted our kitty alittle about 2 yrs ago when she was 4 months old. She is very loving but never was a cuddler unless she wants to be. She will scratch to get away if she doesn't want to be held and that's fine hell I would do that also lol. The issue we are having is we just recently about 4 mo the ago adopted an adult full grown dog. The dog we adopted is very low key and sweet. She is 2 yrs old and we believe was a backyard breeder because she had several litters. She has trust issues with adults and that ok we are working on it. However we expected the cat to adjust by now. We've had bigger dogs in the house before and she's slept next to them and all. She is still very cautious walking around the dog and hisses and bats sometimes at her nose. I just want them both to get along! How do I get them to adjust easier!!

If you had dogs before the cat she would have adjusted because they were always there. This is a strange dog invading her territory. As long as the dog doesn't chase her or try to corner time will take care of things. When she feels comfortable that the dog isn't going to hurt her she'll come around. Does she have a cat tree or someplace high where she can observe the dog and get used to the dog's presence? How did you introduce them? The introduction may have something to do with how she acts now.

It's great that you adopted an older dog but it will take patience and time for the cat to get used to this new housemate. Linda has a good point about having a tree or something your cat can escape to and just watch this dog. Also slowly introducing the 2 plus praising your cat with kind words and/or treats can help her realize that life with this dog is a good thing.
