    Question What is this animal?

During a Rhine River cruise (west/central Europe) recently, my table mates one day spotted a dark brown rodent getting in the water. They said it looks like a beaver except for the ratlike tail. I asked one of them how to search for the name of a swimming mammal with a beaver head and rat tail and she suggested looking up "river rat." That went nowhere as the definition of river rat is a group of humans living near a certain river, not furry animals with long incisors and tapering tails. So I searched "rodents" hoping to find a list of animals in the rodentia order with a matching description. It turns out to be a huge category with thousands of species, so no list of them I could find would be complete. Does anyone know what it is? Sorry, I did not have my camera with me so there are no pictures to show you.

About 40% of all mammal species are rodents, so it's hard to Identify the exact species without any Images. Hopefully, any expert can help you.

I was shocked when I read rodentia is the largest mammal order. It does not even include rabbits, hares, and pikas anymore.

It's sad I could see one. According to Wikipedia, fur traders brought them to Europe.
