Post Guggenheim Museum pulls dogfighting artwork off display amid backlash

The Guggenheim Museum in New York City decided to display a controversial picture of four dogs. Thousands of angry dog lovers were successful after howling it does not belong there.

Nearly 600,000 signatures have been collected on a Change.org petition stating, “animal cruelty holds no place in art in the United States, nor should it anywhere in the world."

Good! What's going to be "art" next? Scenes of people being tortured?

No respect is due the Guggenheim, though:

"Although these works have been exhibited in museums in Asia, Europe, and the United States, the Guggenheim regrets that explicit and repeated threats of violence have made our decision necessary. As an arts institution committed to presenting a multiplicity of voices, we are dismayed that we must withhold works of art. Freedom of expression has always been and will remain a paramount value of the Guggenheim."

^ They did not pull it for ethical reasons, only from fear of violence.

They don't understand the "violence" is what happened to the dogs to make the stupid art. There are probably people who think these are not the same four dogs who used treadmills for a future dog fight, as the petitioner claims. It seems to me Guggenheim just wants people to see dogfighting is part of Chinese culture and this is how they train the dogs.

They're probably looking for free publicity but that's not the way to get it...I would never step foot in that museum!

Nor will I ever buy art that has the name Guggeheim on it! All animal lovers should boycott the museum until they apologize and admit the truth - that animals were harmed for profit - and promise they will never show support of animal cruelty again.

I read many comments on both the Change.org pages and Guggenheim's official Twitter account. A common sentiment is "This is not art."
