Another Recall: Euthanasia drug found in Gravy Train, Kibbles 'N Bits

Another dog food recall has been announced, following a salmonella outbreak affecting four companies.

Smucker's said Wednesday that it is voluntarily recalling some of its products after the FDA found a euthanasia drug in them. The company said tests found pentobarbital in several products under the brands Kibbles 'N Bits and Gravy Train.

Pentobarbital is a drug is commonly used to euthanize animals, according to WNDU.

Note: It angers me that these articles almost never come out and say the obvious - that euthanized animals are ending up in pet food companies' supply chain. The result of not saying so is coy-sounding articles written as if the drug just came out of nowhere and was found in the food.

I read about this in the book Not fit for a Dog! (which actually has more chapters about bad feline diets) and Truth About Pet Food by the owner of a website with the same name. The former book was written by two vets.

The keyword is rendered, which is used in the AAFCO's official definition of poultry/fish/meat meal. That is why you need to know the exact animal protein in it.
