If your planning to have another pet then you should be extra careful and attentive towards them. It's best to not let them stay with other people.

First things first, you have to decide if "pet" should mean a dog. Is it better to take care of animals that bark and howl, or one that purrs and says meow? If the answer is a dog, what is your plan for business travel and/or vacations? It is fine to leave the puppy at someone's house if there is no risk of anything bad happening there, but unfortunately chances are if something bad happened to one dog, there will be a problem with the next puppy.
Keep your cats inside and safe.

I think it's best to not let them stay with other people. I mean if you're planning to have a new dog then you yourself should be the one taking care of it.

I agree with you! It's nobody's fault and yes maybe it's just a coincedence.

Yes , such coincidences do happen and it might lead to suspicions in the future.

Part of "taking care of it" is hiaving a good dogsitter for those times when you can't be home.
