When Do You Know it's Time...

We are fortunate that most of our dogs have died in old age... Although, I've always thought of it that way because they were usually old, had gray hair and lethargic. Don't get me wrong, most of them have spent more than a decade with us.

But how do owners know it's time?
Is it when they've exhausted all means of curing him but he still can't walk? or eat? or move?
Is it the rapid deterioration of health accompanied by an illness?
    Is it because of cancer?

So far i've noticed that most sick dogs become very active and affectionate for a day before they die
