Some Dogs Come Barking At You Then Suddenly Become Friendly

I just have a quick question out of curiosity.

Sometimes, a dog sees you and comes running at you at and barks at you like he or she wants to attack you, and then when the dog finally gets near you, he/she suddenly calms down and becomes friendly.

Why is that?

its a fear reaction to a new person or situation but don't believe the old saying that a barking dog won't bite, one in ten will and who knows which one is that one in ten

Dogs do 'what works' for them as Linda says it is a fear response. It is also a dog that has not been trained if outside its own property, inside its own property it is guarding it ( so resource guarding)
The dog who is likely to be of an anxious disposition who has learned over time that running at, which is a 'show' of agressive behaviour and barking means people 'go away' as 'it works' the dog continues to do it... for those people it doesn't work with and they stand their ground this dog is faced with does it attack or does it revert to being submissive/'friendly'.
Fearful dogs are more dangerous and more prone to bite as they are 'reacting' and not 'thinking'

I agree with both comments. It usually is a fear response.
